St. Andrew the Apostle, whose name is Greek for “courage”, was the son of a Galilean fisherman and the brother of Simon Peter. He was a follower of John the Baptist before being called by Christ. It was Andrew who pointed out the little boy with the 5 loaves and fishes when Jesus wanted to feed the 5 thousand.

St. Andrew shared in the gifts of Pentecost with the other Apostles and went forth to spread the message in Scythia and Greece. He died a martyr by being tied on a cross.

The St. Andrew Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of fisherman, sailors, and protection against gout and neck problems. His Feast Day is November 30.
