St. Jerome, raised a Christian but not baptized until age eighteen, at first preferred Roman literature over Christian writings. In 374, he had a vision in which Christ rebuked him for this. So he went to Chalcis for four years to study Hebrew. After ordination, Jerome lived in Constantinople, studying under St. Gregory Nazianus. He served as papal secretary under Pope St. Damascus.

St. Jerome, Doctor of the Church and the most learned bible scholar of his era, devoted the rest of his life to scholarly pursuits. He revised the Latin version of the New Testament and the modern Vulgate, and wrote commentaries on the Old and New Testaments.

The St. Jerome Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of libraries and translators. His Feast Day is September 30.
