St. Raymond, born in Spain, was called Nonnatus, meaning “not born”, because he was delivered by caesarian section. His mother died in childbirth. As an adult, he joined the Mercedarian Order and went to Algeria to ransom Christian slaves. When his money ran out, he was imprisoned, and was also tortured after trying to convert some Muslim captors. St. Peter Nolasco, the head of the order, finally ransomed Raymond. St. Raymond returned to Barcelona and was named cardinal by Pope Gregory IX. He died in 1240 at the age of thirty and was canonized in 1657.

The St. Raymond Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of infants and childbirth. His Feast Day is August 31.
