St. Joseph was by birth of the royal family of David, but was living humbly as a carpenter when God chose him to be the spouse of Mary and foster father of Jesus. When he learned that Mary was expecting, he feared to take her as his wife, but an angel told him that she conceived by the Holy Spirit. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, again an angel appeared telling him to flee with Mary and Jesus into Egypt. Later, in another vision, Joseph was told to return to Nazareth.

The only other mention of Joseph in Scripture was when he and Mary found Jesus in the temple after searching for 3 days. It is believed that St. Joseph died before the Passion of Christ.
